Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) responded on Sunday to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) criticism of his comments criticizing the Jerry Springer-like turmoil during a House hearing last week, in which the progressive member criticized Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
Fetterman claimed in a social media post that he wanted to apologize to the “Jerry Springer Show” for the insult-laden hearing, which had effectively reached a new low.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to Fetterman, who has recently clashed with progressives over Israel’s conflict in Gaza, by stating that her philosophy is to stand up to bullies on behalf of her colleagues.
“I understand you would not have stood up for your colleague and appear to be confused about racism and misogyny being a ‘both sides’ issue,” Ocasio-Cortez said Friday on the social media platform X.
But, rather than becoming a bully, I stand up to them. And to the ladies of Pennsylvania, I would also stand up for you. “Enjoy your Friday.”
Fetterman described her criticism as ludicrous.
“That is absurd.” When asked to respond to Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of him, Fetterman told co-host Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he was only responding to the mess that Representative Greene had generated.
“And if everyone on the committee was pleased with the results, they have the right to express it. “Or if they believe that this is the type of movie they want to transmit to a classroom of eighth-grade civics kids across America, that is their decision,” he continued.
During a House hearing on Thursday night, lawmakers became enraged to consider holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress after Greene asked Democratic members of the committee if any of them employed the daughter of the judge overseeing former President Trump’s hush money case.
“Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland,” Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) said at the time. “Do you know what we’re here for?”
“I don’t think you know what you’re here for,” Greene answered. “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
Greene’s comments sparked an uproar among Democrats on the committee, including Ocasio-Cortez, who pushed to remove Greene’s words, calling them “absolutely unacceptable.”
