The Biden campaign has agreed to CBS News’ invitation to take part in a vice presidential debate this summer.
The Biden campaign has stated that Vice President Kamala Harris is open to debating on either Tuesday, July 23 or Tuesday, August 13. However, the Trump campaign has not yet officially accepted the invitation, and former President Donald Trump has yet to announce his running mate.
Brian Fallon, the campaign communications director for Harris, expressed his anticipation for the Trump campaign to choose one of the proposed dates. He emphasized the importance of finalizing the debate calendar for this campaign.
According to CBS News, President Biden’s campaign has accepted the offer to host a vice presidential debate, and the same offer has been extended to Trump’s campaign.
Mr. Biden and Trump have both agreed to participate in presidential debates scheduled for June 27 and Sept. 3. The decision to hold these debates was made swiftly after the president’s campaign expressed his willingness to engage in two debates with his Republican counterpart before the November election. This announcement sparked a flurry of suggestions and social media exchanges between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees. Ultimately, it only took a few hours to finalize the dates for the debates in June and September.
During an interview on Wednesday night, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is being considered as a potential running mate for Trump, hinted at the possibility of taking part in a debate.
Scott expressed his interest in the upcoming July debate and hinted that he might engage in a conversation with the moderator if given the opportunity. He conveyed this during an interview with Newsmax, stating, “I hear there’s a debate in July. If you’re the guy moderating, maybe I’ll be talking to you. We’ll see what happens.”
Democratic strategists have put forth the argument that starting the debates earlier would be beneficial for the Biden campaign. They believe that this early start would allow Biden to effectively highlight the differences between himself and President Trump in front of a larger audience. Additionally, they believe that this early start could potentially help Biden overcome some of the disadvantages he faces in polling.
Quentin James, president of The Collective PAC, a committee endorsing Black candidates and supporting Mr. Biden, emphasized the importance of initiating an early one-on-one approach to counter Trump. James believes that by capitalizing on our advantages, it is crucial to begin this strategy as early as possible.
