Former GOP Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming has called on Republicans in Congress to overcome their “cowardice” and do what they know is right. This comes after former President Donald Trump claimed that President Joe Biden authorized the use of deadly force during a search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in 2022. Cheney’s message is a call to action for her fellow Republicans to prioritize their principles and stand up for what they believe in.
The briefing notes for the August 2022 Mar-a-Lago raid were revealed in a recently unsealed court filing. According to the notes, the Department of Justice (DOJ) authorized law enforcement officers to use deadly force if deemed necessary. These notes are relevant to the case against Trump, who is facing 40 felony charges related to the search of his Florida residence. He is accused of retaining classified documents after leaving the White House in January 2021 and obstructing efforts to return them to the appropriate authorities. Trump maintains his innocence and has pleaded not guilty to all charges, vehemently denying any wrongdoing.
On Tuesday, Trump expressed on his Truth Social account that the DOJ has given authorization for the FBI to use deadly force during the operation.
The FBI released a statement in response, emphasizing that the bureau adhered to “standard protocol” during the operation. The statement also highlighted the inclusion of a “standard policy statement” on the use of force.
Cheney, one of the most well-known Republican critics of Trump, expressed her discontent with Trump’s grievances and publicly called out fellow Republican members of Congress on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Donald Trump poses a grave threat as he exhibits instability and poses a danger to society. It is evident that he is aware of the falsehoods he spreads, which could potentially incite violence from his blindly loyal supporters. To the Republicans in Congress, it is high time you set aside your cowardice and take a stand for what you unequivocally know is right.” Cheney wrote on X.
Cheney made her comments in response to Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s claims that the DOJ and FBI had plans to assassinate President Trump. Greene shared a screenshot of a post by Trump on X and urged fellow Republicans to take action.
“Has everyone grasped the situation now???!!!! What actions are Republicans planning to take in response? I made an attempt to remove our Speaker, who provided funding to Biden’s DOJ AND FBI, but the Democrats prevented it,” Greene exclaimed on X.
According to the FBI, the briefing for the Mar-a-Lago raid adhered to standard protocol, including the use of a policy statement that restricts the use of deadly force. It is important to note that no additional measures were instructed, and there was no deviation from the usual procedures in this particular case.
Frank Figliuzzi, former FBI assistant director for counterintelligence, echoed the bureau’s statement in an X post. He emphasized that every FBI operations order includes a reminder of the deadly force policy, even for a search warrant. According to Figliuzzi, the FBI is authorized to use deadly force whenever the necessary threat arises.
In a recent post on Tuesday, Trump made a strong statement, urging for the removal of Biden by invoking the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This amendment outlines the necessary procedures for replacing the president in the event of death, removal, resignation, or incapacitation.
“Now we know, without a doubt, that Joe Biden poses a significant danger to democracy,” Trump emphasized. “He is mentally unfit to serve in officeโcalling for the 25th Amendment!”
