According to a news release from the district attorney’s office, a Louisiana man who admitted guilt to raping a minor received a sentence of decades in jail and physical castration.
Glenn Sullivan Sr., 54, pleaded guilty to four charges of second-degree rape on April 17. Authorities began looking into Sullivan in July 2022, after a young woman told the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office that Sullivan had abused her many times when she was 14. The attacks resulted in a pregnancy, and a DNA test determined that Sullivan was the child’s father, according to the district attorney’s office. Sullivan had also groomed the girl, intimidating her and her family to keep her from coming forward.
Fear hinders the reporting of many such situations. The courage it must have required for this young woman to tell the truth in the face of threats and adversity is simply amazing,” Judicial District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux stated in a news release.
A 2008 Louisiana law stipulates that men convicted of certain rape offenses may face chemical castration. They also have the option to undergo physical castration. Perrilloux asserted that Sullivan’s plea mandated his forcible castration. According to the statute, the state’s Department of Corrections will carry out the process, which cannot take place more than a week before a person’s prison sentence expires. This implies that the castration of Sullivan would not occur until a week prior to the conclusion of his 50-year sentence, at which point he would have reached the age of 100.
“Sex crimes against juveniles are the most malicious crimes we prosecute,” Assistant District Attorney Brad J. Cascio, who handled the case, stated in the announcement. “I intend on using every tool the legislature is willing to give us, including physical castration, to seek justice for the children in our community.”
