Authorities found the suspect, accused of killing an Ohio police officer in a “ambush,” dead on Sunday. U.S. Marshals spokesperson Peter Elliott told reporters in a press conference on Sunday that they discovered Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, 24, dead in a home in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio.
He declared, “The manhunt, the manhunt, is now over.”
The public never learned the circumstances or method of Vaughn’s death.
Authorities stated he was holed up in a house for several hours and was well equipped, probably with a MAC-10 machine gun, during which time multiple police assets were deployed, including drones that the guy is alleged to have shot at.
Authorities were still investigating what happened, but Elliott claimed the suspect “was not willing to give up and come out, surrender peacefully.”
The manhunt began Saturday night, shortly before 10 p.m., when the Euclid Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance report at a property in Euclid, just north of Shaker Heights.
According to Euclid Police Department Chief Scott Meyer, the person on the phone stated that her child’s father had threatened her and her mother with violence.
Meyer claimed that a woman who was “horrified” to be outside talking with officers welcomed the police when they arrived at the property.
According to the woman, Vaughn was on foot when authorities “ambushed them by gunfire” in the backyard.
Officer Jacob Derbin was badly injured. Other police officers opened fire, causing the suspect to flee the scene.
An emotional Meyer identified the deceased officer as a 23-year-old man who had taken his oath as a police officer less than a year ago, on July 24, and said that Derbin died of his injuries later Saturday night.
“His warm heart and huge smile were contagious. He made the world a better place, and everyone who knew him will miss him dearly.
“My heart absolutely breaks,” he added, fighting back tears. “I’d like people to grasp what this looks like. I want children to comprehend the consequences of such brutality. It’s completely horrible, and it’s harming us all. ” My heart breaks.”
Derbin was engaged to be married, and his father is also an officer with the Euclid Police Department, he stated.
In honor of Derbin, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered that all public facilities fly the Ohio and United States flags at half-staff.
“It is a cruel irony that a mother has lost her son on Mother’s Day and that this murder occurred just as we prepare to honor our fallen during Police Memorial Week,” Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement Sunday.
“My heart burns with anger at this injustice for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.”
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, at least 58 policemen have died in the line of duty this year, 22 of them from gunshots.
