In April, a jury convicted Michael Boyd Jr., aged 40, for his involvement in the Montgomery County shooting last summer. As a result, a judge has sentenced him to 90 years in prison, but 55 years will be suspended. If Boyd is released, he will serve five years of supervised probation.
In July 2023, four individuals, including Boyd, were shot outside the Sole D’Italia restaurant located at the 14300 block of Layhill Road in Silver Spring.
Prosecutors have pointed out that in addition to the four individuals who were shot, a fifth person sustained injuries from the fragments of bullets.
Court documents reveal that in the early hours of July 13, 2023, the Montgomery County Department of Police received a distress call regarding a shooting incident at a restaurant. The incident involved a group that had disembarked from a bus and proceeded to charge towards the restaurant.
Camera footage recorded the entire incident.
Investigators were able to track down Boyd, the suspect in the incident, and he was arrested while still wearing the same clothing that was caught on surveillance video.
In April, Boyd was convicted of two charges of first-degree assault and two charges of using a firearm while committing a felony.
On Wednesday, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy expressed his agreement with community members who are tired of the unnecessary violence. “The judge echoed those sentiments today,” McCarthy stated.
