Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said her colleagues will have to choose between “MAGA” and “MUGA” as her campaign to unseat House Speaker Mike Johnson continues forward.
On Wednesday, the right-wing Georgia firebrand, backed by fellow right-wing Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, announced that she would launch a privileged motion next week that would result in an automatic vote within 48 hours on Johnson’s removal.
“I think every member of Congress needs to take that vote and let the chips fall where they may,” Ms. Greene said during a press conference.
She stated that she would call the vote after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar announced that they would vote on a resolution to table Ms. Greene’s motion.
Ms. Greene and Mr. Massie criticized Mr. Johnson’s reliance on Democrats to pass everything from spending bills to reauthorizing surveillance legislation and providing help to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. They lambasted Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jeffries’ efforts as the conclusion of the “uniparty.”
Rep. Greene then wore a hat that read “MUGA.”
“The uniparty is ‘Make Ukraine Great Again,'” she went on to say. “The Uniparty seeks to fund every foreign conflict. They believe that this is the appropriate business model.
Mr. Johnson responded by criticizing Greene’s move to vacate.
“This motion is wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution, and wrong for the country,” he went on to say.
Numerous Republican members of the House, including those who voted to remove former Republican speaker Kevin McCarthy, told The Independent on Tuesday that they did not want to remove Mr. Johnson because the legislation would fail and Mr. Jeffries would become speaker.
But Mr. Massie disregarded those concerns.
“What we’ve seen here coming out of the uniparty,” Mr. Massie explained. “And it will be consolidated, and it will be transparent and apparent next week to all Americans when this vote happens to be any of our colleagues who have grown up in the hands of frustration and apathy.”
Ms. Greene stated that she will proceed with the vote despite the fact that former President Donald Trump has defended Mr. Johnson, even meeting with him at Mar-a-Lago after Ms. Greene filed a request to vacate.
“I’m the biggest supporter of President Trump, and that’s why I proudly wear this Maga hat,” she was quoted as saying. “I fight for his agenda every single day, and that’s why I’m fighting against my own Republican conference.”
Ms. Greene specifically cited the fact that Mr. Johnson signed a spending bill that fully funded the Department of Justice and gave the FBI a new office building in Maryland, despite the agency conducting a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in 2022 over Mr. Trump’s storage of classified documents and Special Counsel Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into Mr. Trump.
Ms. Greene further stated that if the move to vacate is denied, she will not consider it a failure.
“It’s a win for the American people because that’s a list of names,” she went on to say. “I believe in recorded voting. That’s our job.
