Mary Trump, former President Trump’s niece, said it’s “absurd” to believe that her uncle would willingly go to jail if the judge ordered him to for violating the terms of his gag order.
“I think that it’s absurd for anybody to think that he would willingly go into jail for even a night, even an afternoon, honestly,” she told MSNBC’s Alex Witt on Saturday.
Judge Juan Merchan ruled that Trump violated the gag order in his criminal hush money case and fined him $9,000, plus $1,000 for each violation at the time.
Trump’s comments came a day after the former president stated that he would be “very proud” to go to jail for violating his gag order.
Trump has argued that he was exercising his free speech rights, but the gag order prevents him from discussing the jurors, prosecutors, witnesses, or Merchan’s family members, whom he targeted in an online post.
Merchan has stated that Trump may face jail time for future offenses.
Mary Trump expressed her hope that Donald’s imprisonment would be permanent.
“It’s not like he’s going to get a suite at a luxury hotel with guards.” He’s in a cell without his phone, just like any other American,” she remarked, as reported by Mediaite.
She believes that if her uncle is jailed for the violation, he will emerge as a different man.
“I honestly don’t think he could take it. He would adore martyrdom, but I don’t believe he is truly eager to go to jail. “No way.”
