Businessman David McCormick emerges as the Republican nominee for Senate in Pennsylvania, positioning himself to challenge Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) in a highly anticipated race, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.
McCormick easily secured the nomination and successfully rallied the support of the GOP behind his campaign. He aimed to challenge the three-term incumbent Casey and win the Pennsylvania Senate race. This highly competitive race is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests of the year and could have a significant impact on which party ultimately gains control of the Senate in the upcoming session of Congress.
During the 2000s, McCormick held various roles in the George W. Bush administration, including undersecretary of the Treasury for international affairs. Afterward, he took on the role of CEO at Bridgewater Associates, a hedge fund. In 2022, McCormick decided to step down from his position to pursue the Republican nomination for a Senate seat previously held by former Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
In the previous election, he was a close runner-up for the Republican nomination, narrowly losing to Mehmet Oz, who had the backing of Trump. However, he ultimately lost in the general election to Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.). Undeterred, he is making another run for office this year, with the full support of Trump, the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, the state party, and numerous Republican officials.
Casey has emerged as the frontrunner in early polls, holding an edge over McCormick. According to an Emerson College poll, the incumbent enjoys a 4-point lead, while a Franklin & Marshall College poll conducted last month puts Casey ahead by 7 points.
The upcoming race in a crucial battleground state during the presidential election is expected to be closely contested. Both parties acknowledge that McCormick could present the most formidable challenge to Casey throughout his Senate career.
