In a significant endorsement, Melinda French Gates announced on Thursday that she is supporting President Biden in his bid for re-election. This marks the first time that she has publicly endorsed a candidate in an election.
In a recent post on social platform X, the philanthropist made a statement that she had never endorsed a presidential candidate before. However, due to the immense significance of this year’s election for women and families, she felt the need to speak out. She declared that she cannot stay silent any longer.
According to her, women need a compassionate leader who understands and addresses their concerns. This leader should be dedicated to safeguarding their wellbeing, promoting their financial stability, upholding their reproductive freedom, and ensuring their active participation in a thriving democracy. She emphasized that the current election presents a significant contrast between the available choices, and the consequences of the outcome are equally momentous.
In a recent opinion piece for CNN, French Gates, the former spouse of billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates, shared her rationale for endorsing Biden.
In the CNN piece, French Gates stated that her focus on gender equality and global health frequently entails collaborating with leaders from different political affiliations. As a result, she has refrained from publicly disclosing her past election choices.
“This year marks a significant departure from the norm.”
In her opinion piece, French Gates argues that the health and safety of women were put at risk during the first term of former President Trump’s administration, leading to a loss of crucial freedoms.
In an email statement to The Hill, Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, expressed disregard for Ms. Bill Gates’ opinions by stating, “These people have an over-inflated sense of their supposed power and think their money to liberal causes can buy elections.” Cheung believes that the wealthy’s financial contributions to liberal causes do not hold much significance in the outcome of elections.
During a recent interview with Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings,” French Gates shared her plans to vote for the current president in the upcoming election. She explained that she could not support a candidate who undermines women’s reproductive rights and makes derogatory comments about women.
“I will not be casting my vote for Trump, and instead, my vote will go to Biden,” stated with conviction.
