President Joe Biden paid tribute to the brave American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on Monday. He visited Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath and deliver his annual Memorial Day address.
In his brief remarks, Mr. Biden lauded the fallen heroes for their shared dedication to an idea that transcends any specific location, individual, or presidency – the idea of the United States of America. This sentiment echoed the president’s address to the graduating cadets at West Point, where he emphasized their role as defenders of democracy and their solemn oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States against all threats, both foreign and domestic.
Memorial Day is always a poignant time for President Biden as he reflects on the memories of his beloved son, Beau Biden. Beau, who served in Iraq as part of the Delaware Air National Guard, tragically passed away in 2015 after battling brain cancer.
“This week, we commemorate the ninth anniversary of losing my son, Beau. While our experiences of loss may differ, I want to acknowledge the families and loved ones of service members who have tragically passed away,” the president expressed, emphasizing the impact of toxic exposure. “Beau didn’t succumb on the battlefield; he was a cancer victim, a consequence of his time in the Army in Iraq, where he was stationed near a burn pit.” The president proceeded to highlight the significant strides achieved through the PACT Act, which aims to support veterans affected by hazardous materials during their service. Additionally, he proudly mentioned that, since assuming office, he has signed over 30 bipartisan bills dedicated to aiding veterans.”
Mr. Biden welcomed veterans to the White House for a Memorial Day breakfast earlier in the day.
On Friday, President Biden released a proclamation reaffirming our commitment to honoring the legacies of those who have sacrificed their lives, emphasizing the importance of continuing their efforts to create a more perfect Union.
The president’s proclamation emphasizes that the United States is unique in its foundation on the principle of equality and the belief that every individual deserves fair treatment throughout their lifetime. It acknowledges the sacrifices made by countless Americans who have selflessly dedicated themselves to upholding this idea, even at the cost of their own lives. As we honor their memory and pay tribute to their eternal rest, we are reminded to carry forward the torch of liberty that they so passionately upheld.
