Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed her respect for Speaker Mike Johnson, despite their significant political disagreements. This gesture signifies that the top Republican possesses a certain level of influence among congressional Democrats.
While Pelosi did express some reservations, her praise for the speaker facing potential ouster due to efforts led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, was rather muted.
In a recent interview with the Atlantic, Nancy Pelosi expressed her hope that the speculation about Donald Trump being the puppeteer behind Boris Johnson is not true. Pelosi, who was formally declared as the Speaker Emerita by the Democrats, shared her thoughts on Johnson in a lengthy profile.
Pelosi’s perspective on former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Californian, stands in stark contrast. While McCarthy faced criticism for making a joke about hitting her with the speaker’s gavel, Pelosi publicly referred to him as a moron. This highlights the differing attitudes between the two individuals.
According to The Atlantic, the former speaker expressed her view of Johnson as someone who possesses integrity. She emphasized that she does not intend to criticize him.
Nancy Pelosi, who is often recognized as one of the most influential speakers in history, also pointed out the current speaker’s lack of experience. Johnson’s entry into Congress in 2016 makes him the least experienced speaker since 1883.
Nancy Pelosi expressed her personal admiration for his authenticity while acknowledging her disagreement with his political views.
She expressed, “If you’re merely occupying a seat in the back row and suddenly they choose you to be the speaker, they shouldn’t be surprised if you’re not fully equipped with the skills necessary to excel in that role right from the start.”
Pelosi’s doubts about McCarthy were echoed by several other House Democrats, which ultimately led to the party’s decision to support Rep. Matt Gaetz and seven other Republicans in their vote to remove McCarthy from his position. This rare move marked a significant moment in history.
If Greene carries out her threat to force a vote on Johnson, it is expected that Democratic members will come to his defense.
Greene has recently gained the support of two more Republicans, namely Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
