On the week of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, President Biden’s reelection campaign released a commercial criticizing former President Trump for his comments against veterans.
The one-minute film, “What Trump Thinks,” features quotes from Trump criticizing military personnel, some of which he has since denied.
The footage shows Trump purportedly calling American veterans buried in France “losers” and “suckers” in 2018. On Sunday, Biden plans to visit the same cemetery in France.
John Kelly, his former chief of staff, later corroborated Trump’s earlier denial of making the “suckers” statement.
According to the tape, Trump repeatedly criticized then-Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a prisoner in the Vietnam War.
It further stated that Trump informed a war widow that her spouse “knew what he signed up for.” In 2017, Trump denied making the remarks.
According to Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler, the film demonstrates the gap between Biden and Trump’s treatment of veterans and service personnel.
“The choice this November could not be more obvious: Donald Trump has no respect for our men and women in uniform, their families, or the freedoms many of them gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend,” Tyler continued. “President Biden, a military father, appreciates and respects soldiers and their families. President Biden will continue to ensure that veterans receive the health care and benefits they require and deserve. Donald Trump simply doesn’t care.”
In response to the footage, Trump spokeswoman Steven Cheung slammed Biden, adding that the then-vice president referred to troops as “stupid bastards” during a military base address and was spotted staring at his watch during the dignified transfer of those killed in the Kabul airport explosions in 2021.
“Gold Star families have chastised Joe Biden for disrespecting US service members by calling them’silly bastards,’ demonstrating his lack of empathy by repeatedly checking his watch during a solemn ceremony for soldiers killed during the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal,” Cheung said. The reality is that under Biden, America has become weaker on the global stage and more vulnerable,” Cheung said.
On Thursday, the Biden team released an advertisement starring three veterans who called Trump a “draft dodger” and said that he is unsuitable to be commander in chief.
While Biden was in France commemorating the anniversary of D-Day, he released the two videos. He spoke on Thursday and Friday, making subtle jabs at Trump’s America First program and slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
