In an interview on Sunday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her concern regarding the increase in the number of abortions following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the national right to abortion guaranteed under Roe v. Wade two years ago. According to Grisham, more women are now at risk, which is leading to a higher number of abortions.

During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Lujan Grisham expressed her concern that creating a harsh and strict situation would only increase the risk in every possible place. She further added that due to the uneven access to healthcare services in different states, many women face difficulty in finding a healthcare provider, resulting in limited access to contraception and inadequate information about public health.

In a landmark decision two years ago, the Supreme Court stripped away the constitutional right to abortion, paving the way for states to impose stringent restrictions on access to the procedure. Today, almost a third of the states have enforced near-total abortion bans, while others have imposed severe limitations. However, despite these impediments, the Guttmacher Institute, a research group advocating for abortion rights, reported an 11% surge in abortions conducted within the formal healthcare system between 2020 and 2023. The figures revealed the highest count and rate of abortions in over a decade.

Despite the bans, states where abortion is still legal have witnessed a significant surge in the procedure. This trend is particularly noticeable in states that share borders with those that have imposed the most severe restrictions on abortion, such as New Mexico. In fact, New Mexico is one of four states that have experienced the sharpest increase in abortions since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Abortion access in New Mexico has no gestational limits, and the governor has taken steps in recent years to safeguard access by creating a safe haven for providers and patients from nearby states such as Texas and Oklahoma.

“The governor expressed that the state is committed to safeguarding women and promoting equality,” stated the quote.
