Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Wednesday that she will vote for former President Donald Trump in November, despite her disappointments with him.
During a question-and-answer session following a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Haley was asked who she believes would do a better job in the White House on national security issues: Joe Biden or Donald Trump.
The former UN ambassador stated that she prefers a president who will hold adversaries accountable, secure the border, and defend “capitalism and freedom”โadding t that, while “Trump has not been perfect on these policies,” “Biden has been a catastrophe.”
“So I’ll be voting for Trump,” Haley stated.
During a speech announcing her campaign suspension the day after suffering significant losses on Super Tuesday, the former South Carolina governor stated that Trump needed to “earn the votes.”
“It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him,” she stated in March. “I hope he does that. At its best, politics is about attracting people to your cause rather than alienating them. “And our conservative cause desperately needs additional people.”
Many of the Republicans who had battled Trump for the nomination swiftly lined up behind him after dropping out of the campaign.
The Biden campaign attempted to recruit Haley voters, some of whom told ABC News they were undecided.
Following Hayley’s revelation, a representative for the Biden campaign issued a statement promoting their candidate.
“Nothing has changed for the millions of Republican voters who continue to cast their ballots against Donald Trump in the primaries and care deeply about the future of our democracy, standing strong with our allies against foreign adversaries, and working across the aisle to get things done for the American peopleโwhile also rejecting the chaos, division, and violence that Donald Trump embodies,” the statement continued. “Only one candidate shares those values, and only one campaign is working hard every day to earn their supportโand that’s President Biden’s.”
Despite abandoning the race, Haley received primary support in places such as Maryland, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
According to ABC News’ current pledged delegate estimates, Haley has secured 94 delegates to the Republican National Convention.
