The GOP congressional primary race in North Carolina saw a major development as the former front-runner decided to end her campaign. She made this decision after taking into consideration the endorsement her opponent received from former President Trump.
Kelly Daughtry announced the end of her campaign in a statement, acknowledging that a pathway to victory is no longer possible following President Trump’s endorsement of Brad Knott for the Congressional seat in District 13. She expressed her belief in the democratic process and showed respect for the President’s endorsement.
“I have made the decision to suspend my campaign at this time. However, this does not mean that I will remain silent on the issues I am passionate about. Moving forward, my efforts will be directed towards conservative voter registration initiatives and providing support to conservative judicial candidates who are running in the upcoming November elections,” she emphasized.
In the March 5th primary election for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, Daughtry emerged as the frontrunner with 27.4 percent of the vote, while Brad Knott secured 18.7 percent, as reported by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s election results tracker.
Neither candidate achieved the required threshold of more than 30 percent to secure the nomination, resulting in the need for a runoff. The second primary is scheduled for May 14, and early voting has already commenced at select locations in the district.
Daughtry gave his endorsement to Knott’s campaign for the seat and urged the Republican Party to rally behind him. Trump also showed his support for Knott by endorsing him at the beginning of last month.
In a statement, Daughtry congratulated Brad Knott on becoming the Republican nominee on May 14th. She expressed her full endorsement and support for his campaign, emphasizing her intention to unite the Republican Party. Daughtry also made a request to her supporters, urging them to formally back Brad’s campaign.
“I have also had a conversation with Brad, and I am confident that he will passionately support and fight for the entire District. We are all working towards the same goal, and I believe that suspending my campaign at this point will demonstrate and encourage the unity within our party,” she expressed.
The 13th District is currently being represented by Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.), who has chosen not to run for reelection due to the district’s shift towards a more conservative ideology during the state’s congressional redistricting process. In the upcoming general election in November, Democrat Frank Pierce will compete against the Republican nominee for the district’s representation.
Daughtry expressed gratitude to those who voted for him, acknowledging their belief in him and the honor they bestowed upon him with their vote. He emphasized the importance of Republicans coming together and joining forces to secure a victory in the upcoming November elections. Daughtry assured his supporters that he would stand alongside them, working diligently to deliver the desired triumph.
