New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his strong disapproval of U.S. schools allowing the display of another country’s flag on their campuses. He condemned this action as “despicable” while also defending the New York Police Department (NYPD) for their response to the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, where hundreds of officers in riot gear intervened.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Eric Adams expressed his frustration after the New York police arrested approximately 300 individuals overnight. Adams became visibly agitated as the police presented a series of videos showcasing protests at Columbia University and City College in New York. One particular video depicted demonstrators removing an American flag during a protest at City College.
According to Adams, a noteworthy moment in the video occurred towards the end. He expressed his strong feelings about the flag, stating, “That’s our flag, folks. You can’t invade our buildings and hoist another flag. Maybe some people are okay with it, but I’m not.”
Adams seemed to be confusing the two incidents that occurred at the two city schools, both of which have seen pro-Palestinian protests taking place.
A group of students from Columbia University staged a takeover of Hamilton Hall, asserting their views by flying a Palestinian flag outside one of the windows. As a result, the New York police intervened on Tuesday night to address the situation.
Adams expressed his strong sentiment regarding the issue, stating, “My uncle died defending this country and these brave individuals risk their lives. It is truly unacceptable that schools would permit the display of another country’s flag within our own borders. Therefore, hold me accountable for my profound sense of pride in being an American.”
“We refuse to surrender our way of life to anyone,” he asserted.
