Officials in New York City are considering a potential ban on the use of mobile phones within school premises.
During a news conference on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams stated that cell phones are widely recognized as a distraction.
The mayor did not provide any specific information regarding the timeline for a potential ban or the method of enforcement. However, he emphasized that the major concern at the moment is the opposition from some parents.
Adams emphasized the importance of finding a balance between parents’ desire for constant access to their children and allowing the children some independence. “We need to find a sweet spot,” she said.
Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed a measure aimed at regulating social media for children, citing potential negative effects on their mental health. Now, there is a growing movement to ban the use of phones altogether, further emphasizing concerns about the impact of technology on young people.
