Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) urged Senate Democrats to initiate “active investigations” into two reports revealing that flags linked to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack were displayed outside the residence of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
In a recent interview on MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes,” Ocasio-Cortez expressed her concern over the current situation, stating that it goes beyond a mere breach of trust and the reputation of the Supreme Court. She believes that what we are witnessing is a direct threat to the very foundations of our democracy.

In July and September 2023, an “Appeal to Heaven” flag was observed flying outside Alito’s beach house in New Jersey. The flag, which has historical roots tracing back to the Revolutionary War, is now associated with Christian nationalism and the “Stop the Steal” movement. This sighting coincided with the arrival of a significant Jan. 6 case at the Supreme Court.
Just a few days ago, the Times revealed that an American flag was displayed upside down outside of Alito’s home in Virginia in January 2021. This incident coincided with the chaotic events at the Capitol, where rioters disrupted the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
The upside-down flag has become a symbol associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement, which originated from baseless allegations of election fraud in 2020. In a surprising revelation, Justice Alito disclosed that his wife displayed the flag as a result of a dispute with their neighbors.
In a recent interview on Wednesday, the progressive from New York expressed the belief that Democrats should not wait until the next election to investigate Alito, despite their slim majority in the Senate and minority status in the House.
Ocasio-Cortez urged Senate Democrats to initiate investigations promptly.
According to the Congresswoman, there is no need to wait for a Democratic House majority to take action. With a Democratic Senate majority, they have the power to initiate inquiries and issue subpoenas. She emphasized the importance of conducting active investigations to uncover the truth.
According to her, Democrats are gearing up to secure the majority in the House and embark on a more extensive endeavor to uphold democracy. She also believes that it is crucial for Democrats to utilize their power when they have it.
“We can’t always be in campaign mode. We need to shift our focus to governance and accountability. We can’t assume that we will always have a Senate majority, a House majority, or control of the White House,” she emphasized.
“We must recognize the significance of every minute and leverage our power while we still have the opportunity.”
