City Councilmember Susan Zhuang’s office has released images depicting the rampant setting up of illegal vendor shops along the bustling commercial stretch of 86th Street in Brooklyn, New York. Local residents have reported that these vendors are selling perishable goods such as eggs, fish, and fruit.
On Thursday, Councilmember Zhuang, who recently took office in the 43rd District, stated that Sunset Park is also a problematic area.
According to Zhuang, the street vendors arrive with a truck and set up shop on the sidewalk without the need to pay taxes or obtain any permits or health regulations. “I saw it myself, they can sell anything they want,” Zhuang stated.
The photos shared by her office depicted individuals cooking, vending accessories, and leaving their stocks on the streets during the wee hours of the night.
According to Zhuang, dumping is a significant concern as people often abandon their belongings or appliances to avoid city agencies.
With the arrival of warmer weather in recent weeks, she highlights that the problem has become more severe.
Zhuang organized a Town Hall on 86th Street on Thursday
Together with Community Board 11, the NYPD, and DSNY, the lawmaker listened to the complaints of frustrated residents who expressed their disappointment in the ineffectiveness of calling 311.
“They operate as a group and communicate with each other. Whenever the sanitation team arrives, they scatter and disappear. But as soon as the team leaves, they return,” she clarified, referring to the illegal vendors.
Zhuang has announced her intention to establish a task force that can promptly address any reports of vendor activity, taking into account the feedback gathered during Thursday’s meeting.
