Law enforcement successfully stopped an attempted attack on a Wisconsin middle school, ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Fortunately, no one, except the individual intending to carry out the shooting, was harmed in this incident.
According to district officials, the alleged gunman was successfully apprehended outside Mount Horeb Middle School and did not manage to enter the building.
“An initial search of the middle school has not yielded additional suspects,” the district said. “As importantly, we have no reports of individuals being harmed, with the exception of the alleged assailant.”
No information about the assailant was immediately available. ABC News learned from sources that the suspect was 14 years old. At an evening press conference, authorities revealed that the gunman was a Mount Horeb Area School District student, but provided no further details.
A representative for the FBI told ABC News that the investigation is still underway, with agents on the scene to help state and local officials.
Residents received an earlier notice on their phones alerting them to an active shooter at the school with a rifle.
A witness told the Associated Press that she heard gunfire and saw youngsters running for shelter. “It was maybe like pow-pow-pow-pow,” Jeanne Keller told me over the phone. “I assumed it was fireworks. I got outdoors and saw all the kids running. “I probably saw 200 kids.”
On Wednesday afternoon, more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles, including SWAT-style trucks, were visible outside the school. The Wisconsin State Journal published photos of a moving gurney positioned on the sidewalk.
Mount Horeb Middle School is located around 22 miles west of Madison, the state capital. The Mount Horeb Area School District serves around 2,500 children across five campuses.
“You would be so proud of our students and staff, and we’re so grateful for our first responders,” according to the statement.
