US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has received criticism for displaying an upside-down American flag outside his home in the aftermath of the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
Some supporters of Maga use the symbol to challenge the results of the 2020 US presidential election.
Photos allegedly taken by concerned neighbors captured the sight of an upside-down flag flying on Mr. Alito’s lawn in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 17, 2021, according to a report by The New York Times.
It is unclear if Mr. Alito intended to show support for Donald Trump, who lost the election to Joe Biden. Protestors carried the emblem through city streets while chanting “Stop the Steal.”
11 days after a group of far-right supporters of Mr. Trump stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, while Congress was certifying Mr. Biden’s win, images were taken showing a flag outside Alito’s home. These images were captured while justices were deliberating on cases related to the 2020 election.
According to the Supreme Court justice, his wife, Martha-Ann, decided to raise the flag in response to the signs displayed in their neighbors’ gardens.
In an emailed statement to the newspaper, Mr. Alito emphasized that he had no role whatsoever in the flying of the flag.
According to him, Mrs. Alito briefly put up the sign in response to a neighbor’s use of offensive and disrespectful language on their yard signs.
According to the US code, the American flag should never be displayed upside down unless it is being used as a signal of dire distress in situations of extreme danger to life or property.
Critics have already voiced their disapproval of the symbol that Mr. Alito displayed outside his house over three years ago.
Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor, had some sharp criticism for the jurist. In a scathing comment, she pointed out that judges are expected to steer clear of politics. This statement was shared on X.
In response, she expressed her disappointment, saying, “Justice Alito doesn’t seem to care. When I first saw the headline from The New York Times, I thought that someone had placed an upside-down American flag at Justice Alito’s house or that the photo was a deep fake. However, it appears that my initial assumptions were incorrect.”
The justice received immediate criticism from others on social media.
Author Stephen King expressed his astonishment at Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito flying an upside-down flag outside his house to indicate his support for the “Stop the Steal” movement. King was at a loss for words when he came across this display.
Actor Jon Cryer expressed his disbelief at the actions of a Supreme Court Justice’s spouse, who was apparently upset about an anti-Trump sign in her neighborhood. In response, she decided to display a symbol in support of the former president’s attempted coup. Cryer questioned the justification behind this behavior, and also criticized Justice Sam Alito for seemingly condoning it.
Just a few weeks ago, the Supreme Court listened to arguments regarding President Trump’s potential immunity in his federal election subversion case. This controversy arises as there is a question of whether he can be shielded by presidential immunity, ultimately avoiding the prospect of imprisonment.
The high court is anticipated to deliver a verdict in the following weeks.
