During his resentencing hearing on Tuesday, the man convicted of breaking into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s house and attacking her husband, Paul Pelosi, apologized for the assault.
According to KGO, David DePape, 44, received a 30-year sentence in federal prison on Tuesday for the 2022 break-in and attack at the Pelosis’ San Francisco home.
On May 17, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley sentenced DePape to 30 years in federal prison, but the case was reopened after prosecutors pointed out that DePape was never properly given the opportunity to address the court during the hearing.
On Tuesday, Corley apologized to DePape for the omission, stating, “I’m truly sorry for my mistake,” and stated that she would “carefully consider” anything he informed the court to determine a suitable sentencing, KGO reports.
DePape did address the court and apologize, stating that he feels “horrible about what I did to Paul,” according to KGO.
“I’m sorry for what I did, especially what I did to Paul Pelosi,” he told KGO. “I should have just left the house when I realized Nancy Pelosi wasn’t home.”
According to KGO, Corley ended up granting DePape the same term as before, citing the severity of his offenses and the necessity to set a precedent.
In November 2023, a jury convicted DePape of attempted kidnapping of a government officer or employee, as well as assault on a federal official’s direct family member.
On May 17, defense attorneys submitted a brief notice of appeal following his original sentencing.
During the trial, DePape admitted that he was asking Nancy Pelosi about Russian interference in the 2016 election and planned to hold her hostage, but only Paul Pelosi was home when he broke in on October 28, 2022.
During the federal trial, Paul Pelosi testified that DePape questioned him repeatedly, “Where is Nancy?”
DePape struck Paul Pelosi, then 82 years old, with a hammer, causing serious injuries, including a skull fracture, notwithstanding DePape’s claim that he was “never my target.”
At the federal trial, DePape expressed regret for his injuries. “I reacted because my plan was basically ruined.”
Officers on the scene captured the encounter on police body camera video.
After spending six days in the hospital, Paul Pelosi underwent surgery to treat a skull fracture and significant damage to his right arm and hand.
DePape is also facing state charges in relation to the attack. Last Monday, jury selection began in the case.
He faced charges in the state case for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, domestic burglary, elder abuse, false detention, and threatening the life or serious bodily injury of a public official. He maintained his innocence.
According to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, he may face 13 years to life in prison if convicted.
