House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “should resign,” citing the Israeli leader’s strong response in Gaza to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack and claiming Netanyahu has been a barrier to peace “for years.”
During her visit to Ireland, Pelosi made these statements during an interview with Raidiรณ Teilifรญs รireann. Democrats, including President Biden, have become increasingly critical of Netanyahu’s leadership as Israel continues its attack on Gaza.
“We recognize Israel’s right to self-defense,” Pelosi told the Irish news source. “We condemn Netanyahu’s policies and practices. Terrible. What could be worse than what he did in response? First, the exposures. His intelligence officer resigned; he should also quit. He is ultimately liable.”
When asked if Netanyahu is a “block” to peace, Pelosi replied, “He has been for years.”
“I don’t know whether he’s afraid of peace, incapable of peace, or just doesn’t want peace,” she remarked. “But he has been an obstacle to the two-state solution; I emphasize the word’solution..'”
Pelosi has recently urged the Biden administration to cease military supplies to Israel.
Pelosi is not the only prominent Democrat advocating for new leadership in Israel. Last month, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Netanyahu has “lost his way” and called for elections to establish a new administration.
Pelosi, like most Democrats, first declared strong support for Israel in response to Hamas’ terrible terrorist attack and kidnapping of Israeli people on October 7. However, news and photos of civilian deaths and misery in Gaza, as well as Netanyahu’s refusal to reduce the strikes, have heightened tensions between the US and Israeli officials. A growing proportion of Americans believe Mr. Biden should push Israel to stop its attacks in Gaza.
The Senate advanced a foreign aid package that includes an additional $26.4 billion for Israel, following the House’s approval of $95 billion in foreign aid in the form of four different bills over the weekend.
