In a Sunday interview, Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) blasted Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for blaming his wife for displaying the upside-down flag outside his home in the days following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
When asked to respond to the latest Alito controversy in an interview on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday,” Dean recalled Memorial Day and emphasized the significance of adhering to an ethical code.
“I believe I will end where I began, which is: How do we honor the war dead in this country?” We honor the war dead in this country by preserving our Constitution and adhering to a code of ethics that Justice Alito appears to disregard,” Dean added.
“He has shown bias, he has shown impropriety, and he strangely tried to blame it on his wife,” Dean went on. “Aren’t we above that?””We honor our battle dead by maintaining the rule of law and the Constitution.”
The New York Times stated that in January 2021, an upside-down American flag fluttered outside Alito’s Virginia house, around the time protesters stormed the Capitol to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over then-President Trump.
The “Stop the Steal” movement, which emerged in response to false election fraud allegations in 2020, is also associated with the upside-down flag. Alito claimed his wife hoisted the flag during a quarrel with neighbors.
“I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,” Alito told the Times last week. Mrs. Alito briefly placed the flag in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.
