According to the New York City Police Department, a man who reportedly stabbed an 8-year-old boy to death in Queens was shot and killed by a police officer on Thursday.
According to authorities, the stabbing appears to have arisen from a domestic altercation, but the specifics remain unclear. The suspect, who is 20 years old, and the 8-year-old boy who was victimized may be siblings or step-siblings. At present, the names of those involved have not been disclosed.
In the Jamaica neighborhood of the borough, an incident took place inside an apartment building located on 94th Avenue. According to the police, around 5:20 p.m., a 29-year-old woman who had been stabbed in the back left the building and ran down the street to seek help from MTA Police. Simultaneously, the security desk of the building contacted 911.
Police arrived at the scene within three minutes and proceeded to the fifth-floor apartment based on information from a witness.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell recounted the situation where the perpetrator was holding his father in a headlock and threatening him with a knife.
According to the police, the suspect did not comply with multiple instructions to drop the knife. As a result, an officer fired a single shot which hit the suspect. The officers provided immediate medical assistance and the suspect was taken to the hospital but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Police reported that despite the incident, an 8-month-old baby was present in the apartment but fortunately, the baby remained unharmed.
Chell highlighted the immense challenges faced by New York City police officers, including the need to make critical decisions swiftly. She acknowledged the bravery of officers who made such decisions, ultimately saving two lives.

According to the police, the 29-year-old woman and the 43-year-old man were transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention following their injuries. Fortunately, both individuals are expected to make a full recovery.
The investigation continues to be underway.
