An alleged gunman found dead on Sunday “ambushed” and fatally shot an Ohio police officer who was investigating a call of a disturbance at a home on Saturday night.
According to a statement from the Euclid Police Department, the shooting occurred in a residential area of Euclid, Ohio, around 10 p.m. local time. Captain Mitchell Houser, a spokesperson for the department, provided this information.

According to Houser, during the police investigation, a gunman unexpectedly attacked an officer and shot him.
The officer, who was severely injured, was transported to a nearby hospital. Tragically, he was later pronounced dead, according to Houser.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has identified the slain officer as Jacob Derbin.
During a press conference on Sunday afternoon, authorities highlighted the fact that Derbin’s father currently serves as an active officer in the Euclid police force.

Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, who was found dead from a gunshot wound in a home in Shaker Heights, Ohio on Sunday afternoon. Authorities had initiated a search for Vaughn prior to his discovery.
It was not clarified by the police whether Vaughn was killed by them or if he had inflicted the gunshot himself.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting incident.
Just hours after three Atlanta police officers were shot while responding to a call on Saturday evening, another shooting incident took place. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum revealed during a news conference that the officers were shot after receiving a report about a man with a gun.
According to Schierbaum, shots were fired when the officers encountered the suspect, who was allegedly armed with a handgun and knife.
On April 29, a tragic incident unfolded in Charlotte, North Carolina, where members of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force encountered a violent shootout while trying to apprehend 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr. The suspect, who was the subject of active felony warrants, tragically lost his life in the exchange of gunfire. Regrettably, four brave members of the task force also lost their lives, while four others sustained injuries.
According to the nonprofit organization Officer Down Memorial Page, a total of 58 law enforcement officers have lost their lives while on duty this year. Out of these, 22 officers were killed as a result of gunfire.
In 2023, a total of 136 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers lost their lives while on duty. This number represents a significant decrease of nearly 40% compared to the previous year, where 224 officers were tragically lost.
