Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) expressed her concern on Wednesday, stating that if the presumptive GOP nominee secures a second term in the White House this November, she fears that the Department of Justice (DOJ) under former President Trump would engage in harmful actions. She went as far as to describe it as a potential “murdering spree.”
During a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on the Office of Personnel Management, Pressley expressed her concerns about the potential negative consequences of “Project 2025.” This initiative, led by the conservative Heritage Foundation, proposes a comprehensive set of policies aimed at radically transforming the federal government to align with the priorities of a hypothetical future Republican president.
The administration’s initiative, often dubbed as a potential roadmap for a second term under President Trump, aims to centralize executive authority, reduce funding for various agencies, and replace career civil servants with individuals who align closely with the president’s agenda. This ambitious plan is outlined in an executive order called “Schedule F.”
During the hearing, Representative Pressley emphasized the importance of recognizing the underlying motive behind the push for Schedule F by far-right extremists. She emphasized that these individuals view it as a strategic tool to implement their agenda of promoting extensive and aggressive policy changes.
“They have a way of making their intentions clear,” she confidently stated, referring to Trump and his loyal followers.
Pressley sounded the alarm on Project 2025, labeling it as a “far-right manifesto” that encompasses a comprehensive list of extremist policies. According to her, this 1,000-page document aims to uproot government agencies and cause disruption to the lives of every individual residing in the country.
Pressley expressed her criticism of Project 2025’s stance on the use of the death penalty, a practice she has actively opposed in her efforts to abolish it.
In expressing her concerns, she stated that the Department of Justice would engage in a spree of killings. She emphasized that there would be a hasty implementation of the death penalty, which would be extended to a larger number of individuals, all while bypassing the necessary safeguards of due process.
Project 2025 aims to secure closure for the 44 inmates currently on federal death row by urging the next conservative Administration to take all necessary actions.
Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1988, the federal government has only executed 16 individuals. It is worth noting that the majority of executions are carried out under the states’ own death penalty laws.
During the final months of his term in office, the Trump administration executed 13 out of the 16 individuals sentenced to death.
Steven Cheung, spokesperson for Donald Trump, responded to Pressley’s description of Trump’s DOJ agenda during the hearing. Cheung criticized Pressley, labeling her as an “unserious” individual for employing such “ridiculous language.”
