According to Decision Desk HQ, George Latimer has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for New York’s 16th Congressional District, unseating Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.). This result deals a significant blow to progressives, as the primary has been one of the most contentious and divisive races within the Democratic Party this election cycle.
After securing his House seat in 2020 by defeating moderate incumbent Eliot Engel in a primary challenge, Bowman joined the “Squad” – a collective of the most progressive Democrats in the House.
As Latimer and he went head-to-head, it became apparent that the Democratic Party was divided, and this division has only become more evident since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 individuals. With the death toll in Gaza continually rising due to Israel’s counteroffensive, which has exceeded 35,000, tensions have grown, and the rift within the party has deepened.
During his campaign, Latimer focused heavily on Bowman’s stance on the conflict. Specifically, he criticized Bowman for advocating for a permanent cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and for opposing the shipment of additional arms to Israel.
In November, Latimer was highly critical of Bowman’s remarks dismissing reports of Hamas committing rape and sexual violence on Oct. 7, labeling them as “lies” and “propaganda.” However, Bowman has since retracted his statement and issued an apology last week, acknowledging the occurrence of sexual violence after the United Nations presented additional evidence. He also voted in favor of condemning such acts.
Latimer’s supporters utilized Bowman’s remarks on the sexual violence that took place in the mailers to criticize him.
During the presidential primaries, a section of Democratic voters chose to highlight their disagreement with President Biden’s approach towards the war by selecting the “uncommitted” option instead of voting for him. Although this group was relatively small, their actions underscored the division within the party regarding this issue.
The party factions had never been in a more obvious clash than they were in this moment.
At times, the conflict between Latimer and Bowman reached a boiling point, particularly when they participated in heated debates.
According to Latimer, Bowman’s statements have undermined Israel’s right to self-defense and existence. Latimer also accused Bowman of ignoring constituents who are not Black or Brown, including those who are Asian. On the other hand, Bowman accused Latimer of using a “racist dog whistle” by saying that Bowman’s constituency was in Dearborn, Michigan, a predominantly Arab American area represented by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). Tlaib is also a member of the Squad and a strong critic of Israel.
They both denied the accusations.
The 16th District boasts a significant Jewish community, and it is equally notable for its Arab American residents.
According to recent polling ahead of the primary, Bowman’s position appeared to be at risk of being challenged. In fact, in a poll conducted earlier this month, Latimer was found to be leading Bowman by a significant margin of 17 points.
In this election cycle, Bowman’s defeat marks the first time an incumbent House Democrat has lost a primary challenge. It is highly likely that Latimer will secure the House seat in November, given that the district is firmly held by the Democratic Party.
