Reggie Bush will be receiving the Heisman Trophy back for its 20th anniversary, nearly two decades after winning it for his exceptional performance at USC in 2005.
In 2010, Bush had to give up the trophy after USC faced sanctions for various infractions, including Bush receiving improper benefits during his tenure with the Trojans. However, things have changed in college athletics, allowing players to now earn money through their name, image, and likeness. This significant development is one of the key factors mentioned by Heisman Trophy Trust president Michael Comerford in explaining why Bush will be receiving his trophy back.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be reunited with my fellow Heisman winners and to once again be a part of the esteemed legacy of the Heisman Trophy,” Bush expressed in a statement to ESPN. “It’s truly an honor to be welcomed back into the Heisman family. I’m also excited about collaborating with the Heisman Trust to further promote the organization’s values and mission.”
Other Heisman winners have expressed their support for Bush’s return to the Heisman fraternity. Recently, Johnny Manziel vowed to boycott the ceremony until Bush was reinstated. With the latest development, there is a possibility of both men attending the 2025 festivities.
