On Sunday, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) urged the Supreme Court to “intervene” in former President Trump’s hush money case. He called on the high court to expedite the appeal of Trump’s conviction.
In relation to the illegal hush money payments made to cover up an alleged prior affair just before the 2016 election, Trump was convicted this month on 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents. He has appealed the conviction and is set to be sentenced next month.
During an interview with Peter Alexander on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Donalds echoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) call for the court to intervene in the case earlier this month.
According to Donalds, both Speaker Johnson and himself, along with many other Americans, are of the opinion that the Supreme Court should intervene in this matter.
According to the Florida congressman, the negative repercussions for Trump could last for years due to the lengthy appeals process. He also believes that the legal case against Trump is nothing more than a politically motivated attempt to discredit him.
“He’s doing this for political gain,” he asserted. “Everyone is aware of how the court system operates in New York, and the only possibility for a reversal would occur in two or three years. This is why the events that unfolded in lower Manhattan were an attempt to disrupt an election.”
In the past, Johnson described the conviction as “completely unprecedented.”
It’s rumored that Donalds is among the top contenders for the position of vice president on Trump’s shortlist. According to Trump, he will reveal his final decision at the upcoming Republican convention in the following month.
