Senator Mitt Romney of Utah clarified on Wednesday that his presence at the Senate Republicans’ meeting with former President Trump last week does not indicate any change in his opinion of the former president.
According to CNN anchor Manu Raju, Senator Romney clarified on Tuesday that he attended a rally not to show support for former President Trump, but to simply listen to his plans had he won the election. Romney emphasized that, for him, it all comes down to personal character when it comes to President Trump.
Referring to the jury decision that found Donald Trump liable for sexual battery against writer E. Jean Carroll, the speaker firmly states that they draw a line and refuse to support a presidential candidate who has been found guilty of such heinous acts. “When someone has been actually found to have been sexually assaulting, that’s something I just won’t cross over in the person I would want to have as president of the United States,” they assert.
Last week, Trump paid a visit to Capitol Hill where he met with Republicans from both chambers of Congress. It was his first visit to the Capitol since the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and his first official meeting with the Senate GOP conference since his presidency.
Despite being a member of the Republican Party, Romney has emerged as a vocal critic of Trump. He has consistently highlighted the former president’s character flaws and made it clear that he will not be casting his vote in favor of him during the November election.
Senator Mitt Romney of Utah was questioned about his choice of not voting for Trump earlier this year. He cited two significant factors for his decision – policy and character.
Romney believes that the character of the people who have led America in the past has been a crucial factor in making it the most powerful nation on Earth and a global leader. He emphasizes that this includes not only past presidents but also individuals from various walks of life, such as mothers, fathers, church leaders, and university presidents. According to Romney, these people have played a significant role in shaping the nation and its values.
He expressed his concern about the impact of having a president with such a flawed character on the overall character of America. According to him, this is the most important consideration.
In terms of foreign policy, Romney has made it clear that he does not see eye to eye with Trump. Despite securing the GOP nomination and running for president in 2012, Romney has remained vocal about his differences with the current President in this area.
