Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, argued that the recent unsuccessful U.S.-Mexico border bill, which was once again rejected in the Senate this week, was nothing more than a “political ploy” orchestrated by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York.
Johnson criticized Schumer for once again bringing the border bill up for a vote. He accused the Democrats of trying to “get political cover” for the ongoing issues at the southern border. Johnson also called out Schumer for being “disingenuous” in his negotiations on this matter.
“We have once again been subjected to another spectacle, a mere political maneuver orchestrated by Chuck Schumer, in an attempt to seek political protection for their disastrous open-border policies. These policies pose a significant threat to America,” Johnson expressed during an interview with radio talk show host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s “Cats Roundtable.”
According to Johnson, he highlighted that the bill that was previously unsuccessful in February was brought up again by Schumer to show his lack of sincerity. Johnson further pointed out that Schumer had made a statement in the past, claiming that they were playing chess while their opponents were playing checkers, and that they had successfully passed their Ukraine bill and improved their position on border issues.
According to Johnson, Schumer did not negotiate in good faith.
According to the speaker, if negotiations are conducted in good faith and fail, it is not appropriate to taunt or gloat over the failure of the other party involved. The speaker specifically mentions a situation where Chuck Schumer was accused of rubbing McConnell’s nose in the negotiation failure. The speaker argues that such behavior does not align with good-faith negotiations.
The bipartisan border legislation, negotiated for months by Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), was once again voted down by the upper chamber on Thursday. With a vote of 43-50, the bill failed to secure enough support. This outcome was not unexpected, as in February, the legislation was defeated by a narrow margin of 49-50.
Lankford, the GOP’s top negotiator, called the legislation a “prop” before voting against it on Thursday. Schumer has consistently stated in recent weeks that he intends to put the border bill up for a vote in order to underline that former President Trump and his supporters blocked the legislation for political reasons and that Democrats want to take the initiative on the matter.
Republicans have chastised Biden for his administration’s handling of the issue, but Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, told Catsimatidis that the president now has “political cover” and will “secure” the US-Mexico border.
โSecondly, if he really wants to secure the border, how can he make that last statement,โ Johnson said. โThe Democrats are in better shape on the border than they were three months ago? [Their bill] didnโt pass! Biden is not going to secure the border. The only reason that heโs in better shape is that he got the political cover he was looking for. And thatโs all heโs doing here โ heโs trying to reinforce that political cover that unfortunately those negotiations gave him.โ
