On Saturday, reports emerged that boxer Ryan Garcia was detained by the police in Beverly Hills, California. A video capturing the incident showed a man, purportedly Garcia, in handcuffs being escorted out of a hotel.
TMZ Sports reported on Saturday afternoon that Garcia had been arrested for felony vandalism at the Waldorf Astoria. As per the report, the boxing superstar had caused extensive damage to his hotel room and the hallway, resulting in his detainment by the Beverly Hills Police Department. The hotel claims that Garcia’s actions caused over $15,000 worth of damage, according to law enforcement officials.
Late Saturday night, ESPN received a statement from Garcia’s attorney, Darin Chavez. The attorney stated that the boxing star may face charges of public intoxication, and also mentioned that Garcia had recently received “devastating” news regarding his mother’s health.
According to TMZ Sports, one of Garcia’s relatives requested a wellness check on the boxer at the hotel on Wednesday. It’s noteworthy that the New York State Athletic Commission had earlier urged Garcia to undergo a mental health assessment before his fight with Devin Haney that was scheduled for April.
At the moment, there’s uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the fight between Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) and WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney. Garcia recently won a non-title majority decision against Haney, but his victory has been called into question due to a positive test for a banned substance.
