The county sheriff reports that an eight-year-old child shot in the head during a mass shooting at a Michigan splash pad is making “amazing progress” in his rehabilitation.
Officials report that the Brooklands Plaza splash pad in Rochester Hills saw nine shootings on Saturday, including an 8-year-old, his 4-year-old sibling, and their mother.
The defendant, Michael William Nash, allegedly fired 36 rounds before fleeing the scene and committing suicide at home, according to authorities.
The 8-year-old kid and his mother, 39, are still in critical condition, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said at a news conference Monday.
The 4-year-old brother sustained a thigh wound, according to the sheriff, but his condition is stable.
Three of the family’s four members are in the hospital, according to the sheriff, who visited with them.
“Reeling would be an understatement,” Bouchard remarked. “That poor family went through things that no family should ever have to face.”
According to the sheriff, the four-year-old is one of five victims in stable condition at the hospital.
On Monday, the sheriff declared the release of the other two patients from the hospital.
Officials said that all of the casualties, except for the two brothers, are adults.
According to the sheriff, Nash, 42, was carrying two firearms at the scene.
The sheriff reported that authorities seized a treasure trove of other firearms from Nash’s home, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
Bouchard claims that the horrific shooting’s motivation is still unknown.
Nash appears to have been ruminating about various things, adding, ‘Shut your phone off; we’re being watched; they’re listening to us.’ “Walking around the house with weapons… talking about how the government was tracking him,” Bouchard stated.
The sheriff said, “It appears to me… he’s had some mental health things going on,” adding that there is no proof that anyone has reported these apparent mental health issues.
The splash pad shooting occurred hours before another mass shooting at a Juneteenth celebration in Round Rock, Texas, which killed two people and injured 14.
The White House is working with officials in Michigan and Texas, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday.
“The president has been following these tragedies. She said, “We are praying for the families who have lost loved ones due to this senseless violence, and we wish everyone who has suffered a swift recovery.”
“As the president stated, this is not normal, and Congress must act. At the same time, he will continue to employ every tool available to combat the pandemic of gun violence that is tearing our communities apart,” she stated.
