Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico’s condition has improved overnight following an assassination attempt, while his condition remains serious, his deputy said early Thursday.
Slovakian Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said Fico, 59, was shot five times outside a government office in the town of Handlova on Wednesday.
Doctors worked overnight to stabilize his health, and two medical teams treated him. He underwent almost five hours of surgery.
His injuries are complicated, so he is still believed to be in serious condition, according to his deputy on Thursday.
Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba has charged the unidentified suspect with premeditated murder.
Taraba identified the suspect as a “lone wolf” who became radicalized after the country’s presidential election in April.
Fico took office as prime minister in October, campaigning on a promise of ending assistance for neighboring Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, but he had previously served as prime minister twice. He is the longest-serving prime minister in the country’s short history, dating back to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993.
