Leo Brent Bozell IV, a member of a well-known conservative activist family, has been sentenced to 45 months in prison by a Washington, DC, federal court. His conviction stems from his involvement in the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
During the insurrection, Bozell forcefully made his way past the police, shattering a windowpane in the Senate building. He proceeded to chase a Capitol Police officer towards the Senate chamber, and eventually gained access to both then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and the Senate floor. This occurred as a large group of Trump supporters aimed to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
During the sentencing, prosecutor Ashley Akers emphasized the role of individuals like Mr. Bozell in instigating the riot. She stated that he actively facilitated the entry of numerous other rioters into the Capitol building.
Judge John D. Bates handed down a sentence that fell significantly short of the government’s request for over 11 years in this particular case.
On Friday, a federal judge determined that the sentence imposed on Bozell did not align with the severity of his crimes, including the terrorism enhancement sought by prosecutors.
The speaker expressed uncertainty about whether the defendant should be burdened with such a label.
The judge expressed strong disapproval of the 44-year-old’s behavior, as well as the actions of other participants on January 6.
Judge Bates strongly condemned the January 6 rioters, emphasizing that they should never be regarded as genuine patriots. He categorically stated that these individuals are neither political prisoners nor hostages.
During the sentencing hearing on Friday, Bozell expressed his remorse and issued an apology, acknowledging that his actions had left a lasting mark on his family’s reputation.
Bozell’s sentence includes $4,727 in restitution as well.
In September, the Pennsylvania man was found guilty on 10 charges.
The Bozell family name has once again made its mark in right-wing history with the January 6 riots.
Leo Brent Bozell, Jr., played a significant role in American politics by ghost-writing the influential book “The Conscience of a Conservative” for Arizona senator and presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. On the other hand, his son, Leo Brent Bozell, III, established the Media Research Center, an organization dedicated to monitoring and critiquing liberal media.
