Days after the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate took the stand to ban South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem from entering tribal land, another Sioux tribe has joined in the banishment of the Republican leader known for her support of former President Trump and her involvement in the killing of puppies. The Yankton Sioux tribe recently voted to bar Noem from their lands, which cover a small area of approximately 57 square miles in southeastern South Dakota. While this addition may seem insignificant, it further limits Noem’s access within her own state, as she has already been banned from a staggering 16 percent of South Dakota’s territory. As Lakota Law Project director Chase Iron Eyes explained, “If you look at a map, she basically has to stay on the interstate highway.” The six tribes that have banned Noem took issue with her derogatory and racist remarks made during a town hall meeting in March. She insinuated that Native parents were not committed to their children’s education and baselessly accused tribal leaders of colluding with Mexican cartels on reservation land. The tribes intend to maintain the ban until Noem offers a formal apology.
