Spanish police announced on Thursday that they have made their largest-ever seizure of crystal meth, weighing a staggering 1.8 tons. The narcotics, which were intended to be sold in Europe, were linked to Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa Cartel.
During the raid in the eastern Alicante province, the police apprehended a total of five individuals. Among them was a Mexican who was responsible for overseeing the operations of the cartel in Spain, as stated in an official statement.
Antonio Martinez Duarte, head of the police’s drug trafficking and organized crime unit, informed reporters that this seizure of crystal meth in Spain is the largest ever recorded in the country and the second largest in Europe.
“He added that one of the individuals who has been apprehended is a Mexican citizen with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.”
The anonymous informant revealed that the suspect was in charge of receiving narcotics in Spain and then distributing them across Europe.
Martรญnez revealed that the group employed secluded houses in the Valencia region as storage facilities for the smuggled methamphetamine shipments. To transport these illicit drugs to other European countries, they cleverly utilized vehicles equipped with hidden compartments.
In a recent development, law enforcement authorities have taken to social media to share a video depicting officers seizing bags containing what appears to be drugs. The contraband was cleverly concealed within machinery and fake vehicle bottoms.
The Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s oldest and largest criminal organizations, continues to wield significant power and engage in violent activities, despite the apprehension of its founder, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and his son.
Both individuals have been extradited to the United States and are currently serving jail sentences. In a recent development, a federal judge denied “El Chapo’s” request for phone calls and visits with his young daughters.
During the operation, the police detained three Spaniards and a Romanian. They also seized five cars, documents, a weapon, and a sum of cash.
According to Martinez Duarte, the police believe that the trafficking operation was a one-time occurrence and that Mexican organizations do not have a permanent presence in Spain.
According to his explanation, these organizations dispatch a reliable individual to execute the operation according to their own agenda. Once the task is completed, the person returns home.
Law enforcement officials intercepted a shipment of illegal drugs that was destined for central Europe.
Spain, being one of the primary drug gateways to Europe, typically sees a prevalence of cannabis and cocaine trafficking. However, the occurrence of seizures related to synthetic narcotics is relatively rare.
In December, Spanish authorities made a significant seizure of 11 tons of cocaine concealed within shipping containers, resulting in the arrest of 20 individuals. Prior to this operation, police in northwestern Spain managed to salvage a homemade semi-submersible vessel, commonly referred to as a “narco sub,” which they believed was utilized for cocaine transportation.
