Former Trump aide and far-right podcaster Steve Bannon, who was recently sentenced to prison, is appealing to a judge to prevent his incarceration, citing his “important” role in the Trump campaign that he needs to fulfill.
On Tuesday, Bannon took action and submitted an emergency motion to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. His request is to overturn the previous order from a lower court, which mandated that he report to prison on July 1.
In his bid to serve as a “top advisor” to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, he has requested additional time to appeal his contempt of Congress conviction, even if it means taking the case to the Supreme Court.
According to a statement from Bannon’s lawyer, the government intends to incarcerate Mr. Bannon during the four months leading up to the November election, a crucial time when millions of Americans rely on him for insight into significant campaign matters.
“If Mr. Bannon were to be imprisoned, his capacity to engage in the campaign and express opinions on crucial policy matters would be significantly limited, if not completely eliminated.”
On July 1, Bannon is set to begin serving his four-month sentence after being ordered to report to prison. He was found guilty of contempt of Congress in 2022 by a jury for his failure to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee, which was investigating the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.
In the past couple of years, the right-wing personality has skillfully evaded imprisonment by appealing against the conviction. However, in May, the court upheld his conviction, and just recently, a federal judge ruled in favor of prosecutors by reversing the stay on his sentence.
Bannon is furious about the decision and is determined to explore all possible legal options to appeal his conviction, even considering taking his case to the Supreme Court.
Last week, Bannon boldly declared, “No prison or jail can silence me.”
In a baseless claim, the ex-Trump administration advisor has alleged that his sentence is aimed at shutting down the MAGA movement and President Trump.
Bannon’s legal team has requested the DC Circuit Court to make a decision on the motion by June 18. This will provide ample time for Bannon to file an appeal to the Supreme Court, if necessary.
According to them, the Supreme Court might consider taking up his case, which they deem to be a landmark one. They point to the court’s recent decision in the contempt of Congress sentencing of ex-Trump aide Peter Navarro as a potential indication of their interest.
