According to a global study released on Wednesday, Europeans prioritize immigration control over climate change, and less than 15% of people polled worldwide believe climate issues are among the top three priorities for their country.
“Many European countries have seen a sharp rise in the share of people who say that’reducing immigration’ should be a top government priority,” according to a report commissioned by the Danish think tank Alliance of Democracies Foundation.
Germany led the way, with 44% of respondents wanting their government to focus on decreasing immigration, while nearly a quarter of Germans polled said combating climate change was a top priority.
Globally, 33% feel climate change is one of the world’s three most pressing issues, but only 14% believe combating it should be one of their government’s top priorities.
Based on nearly 63,000 interviews conducted in 53 countries, the Democracy Perception Index discovered that 85% of individuals interviewed believe democracy is vital in their country. However, governments do not always live up to citizens’ aspirations. While 58% of respondents were pleased with the state of democracy in their nation, the rest were not.
The study discovered that non-democratic countries were not the only ones experiencing unhappiness. It was also widespread in the United States, Europe, and other countries with a long democratic history. In Europe, around one-third of Hungarians believe they live in a democracy.
The survey was based on interviews conducted between February and April. The margin of error for all countries sampled was around 2.9 percentage points.
