A Texas woman, who traveled out of the state to have an abortion, is facing legal threats from her ex-boyfriend. He is also seeking to target those who assisted her.
In late February, a woman in Colorado legally sought an abortion. However, when her ex-partner, Collin Davis, learned about her plans, he hired attorney Jonathan Mitchell, known for his anti-abortion stance.
Crossing state lines to obtain an abortion is still considered legal across the United States. However, this poses a significant challenge for Mr. Davis and his attorney, Mr. Mitchell. According to district attorneys, enforcing abortion laws can be quite complex.
The lawyer, who played a key role in implementing Texas’ current abortion ban, has not yet responded to The Independent’s request for further comment.
According to the Post, it is possible for fathers of aborted fetuses to file a lawsuit for wrongful death in states with abortion bans, even if the abortion takes place outside of the state.
According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, these cases demonstrate an increasing effort by anti-abortion activists to further limit women’s rights.
Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center, expressed concern over the growing trend of restricting access to abortion in various states across the country. She emphasized the alarming efforts to criminalize abortion and highlighted the potential consequences of trapping individuals in such states.
“The nationwide denial of abortion access is a terrifying step in the direction that the anti-abortion movement wants to take.”
Abortion continues to be a major concern in the upcoming 2024 election, as several states are embroiled in battles over near-total bans.
A federal judge has recently declared that certain abortion regulations in North Carolina are illegal. Additionally, in Arizona, a ban that dates back to the Civil War era is expected to be overturned. However, the process of lifting the restrictions may take several months.
Heading into November’s election, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made a vow to fight against the heavily restrictive abortion laws that exist in around half of the US states.
