On Friday, the European Union made an announcement that it will commence accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova to become part of the 27-member political and economic bloc from next week.
According to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, talks will commence on Tuesday in Luxembourg for both nations.
Amidst Ukraine’s ongoing invasion by Russia and Moldova’s struggle against a Russian-led insurgency by a breakaway state, both nations are faced with a critical time. This move is crucial in addressing the challenges that they are currently facing.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, expressed his gratitude towards the European Union for exhibiting a “robust political will” to initiate negotiations with his country, despite the ongoing aggression from Russia.
Zelensky expressed his anticipation for the upcoming week and extended his congratulations to the Moldovan people for taking a significant step towards a shared European future. He emphasized the importance of working together to strengthen the EU and expressed his gratitude towards his team for their hard work in making this historic step a reality.
As a full-fledged member of the European community, Ukraine is finally realizing its European dream, much to the delight of millions of Ukrainians and generations of our people. For centuries, Ukraine has belonged to Europe, and now it’s returning to its rightful place.
President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has confirmed on her social media that she has also signed a decree permitting the commencement of accession negotiations with the European Union.
Sandu expressed her belief that joining the EU would lead to peace, prosperity, and an improved quality of life for all citizens. She wished the delegation success as they commenced official negotiations in Luxembourg the following week.
Earlier this month, the European Union declared that Moldova and Ukraine have fulfilled the necessary prerequisites to become members of the group. However, before they can join, all 27 member countries need to give their approval. It is anticipated that Hungary and its President Viktor Orban will pose significant challenges for both nations.
Despite his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Orban has been vocal about his disapproval of Ukraine’s corrupt practices in the past.
