In a new interview, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., a potential vice presidential nominee, said he would not recognize the conclusion of the 2024 election, regardless of who wins.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, host Kristen Welker questioned Scott, who voted to certify the 2020 election results, why he would be on the same ticket as former President Donald Trump, who has for years pushed false rumors that the 2020 election was stolen.
“The facts are apparent here. President Donald Trump has stated that he expects this election to be fair. He expects it to be straightforward. And he expects to triumph. That is what the presidential candidate should expect, and I expect the same thing from the American public. “This is a non-issue, so I’m not going to make it one,” Scott stated.
“But senator, will you commit to accepting the election results of 2024, bottom line?” Welker enquired.
“At the end of the day, Donald Trump will be the United States’ 47th president. “And I’m excited to get back to low inflation and unemployment,” Scott said before Welker asked him again if he would accept the results of the November election.
The tense exchange continued, with Welker repeatedly questioning Scott about whether he would accept the conclusion of the 2024 election and the South Carolina legislator refusing to confirm.
At one point, Scott responded by saying, “I’m not going to answer your hypothetical question when, in fact, I believe the American people are speaking today about the results of the election.”
Scott, who competed against Trump in the 2024 Republican primary but later withdrew, has been aggressively campaigning for the former president as talk about the vice presidential position develops.
