In the recent GOP primaries in Maryland, Nebraska, and West Virginia, Haley garnered substantial vote shares. It is important to note that these primaries were exclusive to Republican voters, meaning that Democrats and independents were unable to participate, unlike in previous primaries.
Registered Republicans provided all of Haley’s votes in the three states during Tuesday’s results.
According to Ashley Davis, a Republican strategist, there is a perception that these votes are primarily driven by opposition to Trump. However, there are also individuals who support the policies and political approach of the candidate in question. Davis argues that among these voters are staunch conservatives who may ultimately lean towards supporting Trump.
“We must keep in mind that, in the upcoming general election, it will be of no consequence whether the voters are registered as Republicans, Democrats, or independents,” she emphasized. “They will have the freedom to vote for whichever candidate they choose. And, as we are aware, there are numerous voters who are not particularly enthusiastic about any of the candidates.”
Candidates who have dropped out of presidential races often continue to receive support. This was evident in the 2012 Republican primaries when former candidates like Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich received significant percentages, sometimes in the double digits, even after Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) secured the nomination that year.
Despite President Biden securing the nomination, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) continued to perform well throughout the 2020 primary season.
Haley’s popularity has been remarkable, as she has managed to secure up to 20 percent of the vote in certain states. What’s even more interesting is that Haley has refrained from endorsing Trump for president, which suggests that she is not ready to throw her support behind the presumptive nominee. This indicates that there are other Republicans who share the same sentiment and are hesitant to fully back Trump.
In an interview with Scripps News, Trump downplayed the notion that he was at risk of losing the voters who supported Haley, stating that she had garnered relatively few voters.
According to Trump, the voters are coming to him, and he believes that even some Democrats are included in that group due to the intricacies of the system. He confidently asserts, “And those voters are all coming to me.”
According to a statement from Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt to The Hill, Trump is currently working towards creating a groundbreaking and united political movement. Leavitt also mentioned that Trump enjoys an approval rating of over 90 percent from Republicans. Additionally, Leavitt highlighted the fact that Trump has made significant progress in gaining support from traditional Democratic voter groups such as Black and Hispanic Americans, as indicated by various polls.
Leavitt expressed that President Trump’s team welcomes anyone who supports securing the border, rebuilding the economy, restoring American energy dominance, and ending the wars initiated by Joe Biden globally.
However, some Republicans argue that it is not guaranteed that all of Haley’s supporters will automatically vote for Trump in the upcoming November election.
According to GOP strategist Doug Heye, the current race is heavily influenced by the weaknesses of the candidates. In particular, this poses a significant challenge for Trump. While it is expected that most of the supporters who previously backed Haley will eventually support Trump, the question remains about the remaining voters. The campaign seems to lack a clear plan on how to win over those who proudly wore “permanently banned” T-shirts. In crucial states, these voters could potentially make a difference.
According to Republican strategist Rina Shah, the votes received by Haley are a clear indication that many voters still hold a favorable view of her and are currently undecided on their course of action.
According to her, Haley has handled herself exceptionally well since leaving the presidential race. She hasn’t just endorsed Trump because he belongs to the same party, but has made a thoughtful decision based on her own judgment.
According to Shah, the support for Haley’s candidacy represents both a statement and a hopeful desire that neither Trump nor Biden will be the options in the upcoming general election. Shah also noted that Haley managed to capture the attention of some center-left voters during her presidential campaign.
According to her, people are left with a sense that the GOP could have performed better.
Biden’s campaign has not made direct contact with Haley or her supporters, but they have shown openness to engage. In March, the president’s reelection campaign released an ad called “Join Us,” specifically targeting Haley’s supporters. The 30-second advertisement highlighted instances where Trump had insulted Haley and her followers.
According to a survey conducted by Emerson College in March, there is potential for Joe Biden to gain votes from Nikki Haley’s supporters. The survey showed that 63 percent of Haley’s supporters expressed their willingness to back Biden, while 27 percent indicated their support for Trump.
However, there are doubts from other Republicans, considering Biden’s stance on significant matters.
According to Davis, many of her voters are still staunch Republicans who are worried about the state of the economy, border security, and crime. Even if they didn’t initially support Trump during the primaries, they believe that he will be more effective than President Biden in addressing these concerns.
According to Shah, these voters won’t necessarily switch their vote to support Biden. Instead, they are likely to take their time in deciding who to give their support to.
She said that it cannot be assumed that this group will definitely vote for Biden, as there is not enough information available about them.
