During a campaign event in the Bronx, former President Donald Trump revealed a few potential candidates for the role of his vice president, suggesting that the list of contenders may be getting shorter.
During an interview with News 12 New York, President Trump highlighted a few individuals as his top choices, including Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Dr. Ben Carson, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY). This list has been expanding with time.
When asked about his potential picks for vice president, Trump expressed that he had numerous individuals in mind. He mentioned names like Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, and J.D. Vance as potential candidates. Trump also acknowledged the great work being done by Elise, but emphasized that there were many others who he believed would excel in the role.
During a discussion about the timeline, Trump mentioned that he would reach a decision “sometime during the convention,” which is the customary period for presidential nominees to unveil their vice presidential candidates. Trump has considered all of these individuals as potential picks for various reasons.
Senator Marco Rubio is a highly influential and prominent political figure.
The selection of Rubio as Trump’s running mate raises constitutional concerns. According to the 12th Amendment, the president and vice president on the same ticket cannot be from the same state. This means that if they were to win, the state in question would be unable to vote for them.
Florida residents have reason to be concerned as the upcoming 2024 election, which will feature a closely contested race between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden, approaches.
Rubio acknowledged that he has had conversations regarding the possibility of being Trump’s vice president. He also indicated that he is well-informed about the concerns raised regarding the constitutionality of having two individuals from Florida on the same ticket.
According to Rubio, Donald Trump is destined to win the election regardless of his choice for the vice president. Rubio believes that Trump’s criteria for selecting a running mate, which is someone who is ready to assume the role of president, is the appropriate one.
Dr. Ben Carson
Choosing Carson as a candidate would further enhance Trump’s appeal among black voters, a demographic where he has already made significant strides, according to recent polls.
During an interview with the Washington Examiner, Carson expressed his belief that black voters would gravitate towards Trump. This voting bloc has been actively pursued by the former president.
According to Carson, he believes that Trump is successfully gaining support from various demographic groups in the country, including black voters. He emphasizes that these individuals acknowledge the fact that they experienced better conditions under Trump’s administration compared to the current situation.
Ben Carson, a former surgeon-turned-politician, expressed unwavering confidence in Trump’s victory in the election as well. Having run for president himself in 2016, Carson was optimistic about Trump’s chances.
Sen. J.D. Vance
Vance demonstrated his unwavering support for Trump by making a recent visit to the courthouse where Trump’s New York criminal hush money trial is taking place. The senator, who is new to the political scene, has assumed the role of a fierce critic, launching scathing verbal attacks against Judge Juan Merchan and questioning the integrity of the entire trial process, which Trump’s gag order had previously prevented him from addressing personally.
“After visiting the trial, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s true intentions behind prosecuting Trump have become apparent — it is nothing more than a political game rather than a genuine pursuit of justice,” Vance stated in a press release.
J.D. Vance, the author of Hillbilly Elegy, had previously expressed criticism towards the former president and revealed that he did not vote for him in the 2016 election.
During a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose, Vance openly declared his opposition to Trump, stating, “I’ve never been a fan of him.”
In recent times, Vance, like many others in the Republican Party, has become less resistant to the former president.
Rep. Elise Stefanik
Stefanik has climbed the ranks in the House, capturing widespread attention for her tough questioning of university leaders during a highly impactful hearing focused on tackling antisemitism on college campuses.
She proudly identifies herself as an “ultra MAGA” and embraces it. Many people see the Trump-Stefanik ticket as a strong choice due to their connections to New York.
According to New York-based Democratic strategist Jack O’Donnell, there is a strong association between the former president and New York, particularly New York City. O’Donnell explains that the former president’s career, fame, and television show are all closely tied to the city. Therefore, it seems fitting that he would select a fellow New Yorker like Elise Stefanik to be on the ticket, especially now that he is no longer a resident of the state.
