Former President Donald Trump made his first public comments about former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who eventually broke her silence and stated that she would vote for him.
“I appreciated what she said,” Trump told Long Island’s News 12 following his rally on Thursday.
Trump then said Haley could join his “team” and referred to her as a “capable person.”
“Is there room for her on your team, or, better yet, your ticket?” the reporter inquired.
“Well, I think she’s going to be on our team because we have a lot of the same ideas and thoughts,” Trump replied.
“You know, we had a horrible campaign; it was pretty ugly.” But she’s a highly capable individual, and I’m confident she’ll be on our team in some capacity. Absolutely.”
His remarks differ from his normal rhetoric on the campaign trail, when he frequently referred to Haley as a “birdbrain” and questioned her intelligence. He spent months focusing his attention on Haley during the GOP primary, increasing his attacks on her as she insisted on remaining in the race after other candidates dropped out.
On Wednesday, at her first public appearance since leaving the presidential campaign, Haley stated that, despite her disappointments with Trump, she believes he is a superior candidate to Biden.
“Trump has not been faultless in his policies. I’ve made it quite apparent. But Biden has been a disaster. So I’ll vote for Trump,” Haley stated at the Hudson Institute in Washington.
Earlier this month, Trump dismissed the idea of Nikki Haley as his running mate, writing on social media, “Nikki Haley is not under consideration for the V.P. slot, but I wish her well!” in response to a news report alleging the Trump campaign is considering Haley as his vice presidential candidate.
News 12 questioned Trump about potential vice presidential nominees during his interview on Thursday night. He refused to reveal his top three picks but did mention some candidates he is considering: Ben Carson, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. JD Vance, and Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Trump then announced that he would make his final decision “sometime during the convention.”
