Donald Trump described Taylor Swift as “unusually beautiful” but “liberal,” adding that “she probably doesn’t like Trump.”
Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh interviewed the former US president and recently convicted felon in November for a new book about his time hosting The Apprentice, Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass, due out on June 18.
When asked about Swift, Trump answered, “She has amazing star qualities. She actually does.”
He said, “I think she’s gorgeous—very attractive! I think she’s gorgeous. I think she is liberal. She probably dislikes Trump. I’ve heard she’s incredibly talented. I think she’s unusually gorgeous!”
When asked particularly about her music, Trump said, “I don’t know it well.”
He then questioned whether the pop artist is indeed politically liberal, asking, “Is she liberal, or is it simply an act? Is she a legitimate liberal? Isn’t this an act?” It surprises me that a country star can be successful while being liberal.”
When Setoodeh pointed out that Swift is no longer just a country artist, Trump said, “Garth Brooks is leftist. Describe that! How does this happen? But he is liberal. It is one of those things.”
During the 2016 election season, Swift was believed to be a private Republican supporter, but in 2018, she endorsed Tennessee Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen for the Senate and Jim Cooper for the House.
In her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana, Swift discussed her choice to become politically active.
“Back in the [2016] presidential election, I was in such a horrendous place that I wasn’t going to pop my head out,” she says. “These are not your father’s celebrities or Republicans. I need to be on the correct side of history.”
In the 2020 presidential race, Swift publicly supported Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. After that year’s Black Lives Matter rallies, Swift tweeted to Trump, “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?” “When the looting starts, the shooting begins.” “We’ll vote you out in November.”
Swift elaborated on how Trump had influenced her political viewpoint in a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair, saying: “As a country musician, I always heard it’s best to remain out of politics.” The Trump presidency compelled me to engage and educate myself.”
