Two NYPD officers, whose fathers made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, were granted well-deserved promotions on Friday morning at the police academy.
Officer Francesca Mosomillo, 28, is taking on new responsibilities in the NYPD as she receives a promotion. With this advancement, she remains dedicated to her duty of protecting and serving the people of New York City. This promotion marks another milestone in Officer Mosomillo’s journey with badge number 20316.
“I feel incredibly honored to be able to bring my dad’s police shield into the detective bureau,” she expressed. “It’s even more special because it’s the first shield number with five digits that belongs to a detective.”
In 1998, when her father, Anthony Mosomillo, tried to apprehend a drug dealer who had skipped court, he was tragically shot and killed.
Now, after 26 years, his daughter has proudly taken on the role of detective, donning the same badge number as her father.
Like Mosomillo, Officer Steven McDonald risked his life and physical well-being to serve the people of New York. Despite his own limitations, McDonald never allowed them to hinder his ability to demonstrate the importance of living according to moral principles and leading with love.
Captain Conor McDonald shared that his father had imparted a powerful message before his passing: “Love is the way.”
McDonald imparts this message to his young daughter following his promotion to captain.
In 1986, his father was shot while attempting to apprehend a bike thief in Central Park. Despite being left paralyzed, it did not hinder his determination and resilience.
McDonald, until his death in 2017 at the age of 59, transformed his tragedy into a fresh purpose: to motivate and assist fellow officers.
“I wouldn’t have chosen this path for him, but he made the decision and I couldn’t be prouder,” expressed Patti Ann McDonald, the widow.
After being employed for 14 years, McDonald expressed his intention to carry forward his father’s message of love and perseverance, but this time in the role of a captain.
McDonald expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has been given and the positive experiences he has had with the people he has worked with in his job and in the city. He feels fortunate and blessed to have been treated well by his colleagues.
