On Wednesday, federal officials confirmed that Christy Abizaid will be resigning in July from her position as the director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Abizaid has held this role for the past three years.
Brett Holmgren, the Director of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, will take over as the acting director of the National Counterterrorism Center, replacing Abizaid, who is 45 years old.
Avril Haines, the director of National Intelligence, praised Christy Abizaid as an exceptional leader who is not only highly efficient but also possesses the qualities of integrity, bravery and compassion. As per a prepared statement, Haines acknowledged Abizaid’s remarkable leadership skills.
According to Haines, although they will miss her, they are incredibly fortunate to have Brett Holmgren stepping up to lead NCTC.
According to Haines, Holmgren is an exceptional leader in the field of counterterrorism.
Abizaid initiated her profession at the Joint Intelligence Task Force Combating Terrorism in the Defense Intelligence Agency.
During her tenure, she served as a senior analyst in both the Middle East Division and the Afghanistan-Pakistan Division, showcasing her expertise and proficiency in the region.
Before joining the private sector, Holmgren held several key positions in the US government. He served as a counterterrorism analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency, a senior analyst at the CIA, and as the counterterrorism director at the National Security Council during the Obama administration.
Lisa Kenna, who previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Peru and most recently as the State Department’s principal deputy assistant secretary, is set to take over as the new director of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, succeeding Holmgren.
